Moncucco

“The Langhe are never lost” confides the cousin of The South seas walking up the Moncucco hill, a viewpoint over Santo Stefano Belbo, dominating the entire valley. “One evening we were walking on a hillside, silently. In the shade of the late twilight my cousin is a giant dressed in white, moving calmly, his face tanned, taciturn. Keeping quiet is our virtue. From the top on clear nights you can see the reflection of the distant Turin beacon.”

The beacon in the distance is the winged Victory holding an intermittent light (18 and a half meter tall) with an epigraph by Gabriele D’Annunzio, donated by Giovanni Agnelli in 1928, shortly before the poem opening the collection Hard Labour was written.
