The house where he was born

The house where he was born, where his parents used to spend their summer holidays, is rather out-of-town, on the road to Canelli. The house architecture, whose original garden is lost, is different from the traditional rural one. It already shows a taste typical of the provincial petty bourgeoisie settled in the city. It has no longer belonged to the Pavese family for quite a while. It was sold after the premature death of his father and has changed several landlords, ever since, who have transformed it in different ways. The childhood landscape, that fantastic world of vineyards, thickets and hills – lost with the sale of the house, but thought and dreamt of from the city – was the source from where the writer afterwards drew for his literary work.
