The church overlooks another square of the town, just as big as a cathedral. On its staircase, in the troubled times after the second World War, the priest gave an impassioned speech against partisans and communists, following the finding of the corpses of two supporters of the Italian Social Republic. Anguilla, too, was listening: “So, under that sun, on the church steps, I heard the voice of a priest speaking up after so long. And to think that when I was a child, when Virgilia took us to the Mass, I used to believe that the voice of the priest was like thunder, like the heavens, the seasons – that it was of help to the country, to the harvest, to the well-being of the living and the dead”.
